Something to talk about
Words by Rachel Watkins
Hobson’s Bay city council has installed the first piece of artwork for the ‘Conversations’ billboard art project.
Kathleen McCann’s artwork entitled ‘Monday 21’, based on an entry from her sisters diary while growing up in war torn Northern Ireland in 1972, now features on the Kororoit Creek Road billboard.
Earlier this year the Council put out the call for submissions, the program provided artists the rare opportunity to express their opinions on social issues such as poverty, terrorism, the environment, racism, gambling, cultural diversity and religious tolerance in the public arena.
The winning submissions were determined by an advisory panel consisting of artists, representatives from Vic Roads and Hobson bay council officers.
After the second instalment, a piece by Jon Campbell is displayed in January the council will re-open the call for submissions to complete the second portion of the ‘conversations’ project.
