Take a Detour

Words by Rachel Watkins

As a six year old boy he was inspired by his sisters’ keyboard, decades later Glen Wilson has followed his dream to write and record his own music.

Knowing he was destined to be in the music industry, Wilson became a qualified keyboarding and theory teacher before attaining his high school diploma.

From humble Beginnings playing in pubs, clubs, piano lounges, with tribute bands and varied duos, he worked his way up within the industry breaking into recording as a session worker, providing back up vocals and keyboard for numerous artists.

Leaving his coastal home town of Redcliffe, Queensland in 2001, Wilson made the journey to Melbourne to pursue his dream.

“I left a good job, took a chance and made the break,” he explained.

His chance paid off, drawing inspiration from the tragedies, failed relationships, comical experiences and love in his life Wilson created the eclectic EP ‘Eckto Gekto’.

Hailed as a “multi faced creation” the diverse range which includes Aussie rock, contemporary ballads and alternate sound provides something which will appeal to all tastes.

Wilson describes his favourite track, ‘Detour’ as a “revelation of breaking away from one part of my life and moving onto another.” The track has proven to be a favourite amongst his fans, receiving more than 230 plays on his myspace account www.myspace.com/glentwilson.

Based on the site the crowd favourite is the easy to relate to ‘Jaded’, co-written by Phil Slink, the Cold Play and Bov Jovi inspired song was written about a bad break up.

Wilson’s eccentric music has won him various awards, ‘something in the way’ a track very dear to his heart placed fourth in the 2006 International Acoustic Music Awards. Taking three years to complete the song tells of Wilson’s best friend who was tragically killed in a car accident, ‘I know in my heart you’ll stay. Always something in the way.’

The 2006 International Acoustic Music Awards was a successful event for him also walking away with fifth place for the 80’s inspired pub anthem ‘What do you want’. The track was later named as the judge’s choice in the National Starburst Competition.

From the allure of a keyboard, to performing, recording and writing Wilson has stuck to his guns. While ‘Eckto Gekto’ remains unsigned, he is well on the way to making his childhood dream come true.
