2007 - the year that was in hair
By Belinda McDonald
The year that is 2007 has seen many new trends in hair, some of which are old favourites coming back in fashion.
The concave bob
The concave bob, seen on celebrities such as Victoria Beckham, has created a stir over the hot women’s style.
Frank Mollica of Hair News in Werribee says that the hairstyle is definitely the most popular style of
the year.
The concave bob is a short hair style through the back of the head, much like a bob, then angles out through the front and gets longer.
“It is a slicker style than the old bob,” explains Cassandra Debrincat at Remedy Hair n’ Beauty
in Seabrook.
“There are plenty of angles to it, making girls feel a bit different, a bit stylish.”
Ms Debrincat says that the style can suit anyone with the courage to wear it.
However, it is most suited to girls with an oval shaped face and thicker hair.
It is a versatile hairstyle, with girls being able to wear it straightened or as a messier look.
Hair extensions
Hair extensions are a worldwide craze that has taken Australia by storm in 2007.
With an increasing number of salons being taught the ins and outs of hair extensions, it only proves the styles popularity.
“Hair extensions have been going crazy for a while now,” confirms Mr Mollica, who also operates the company Designer Hair Extensions.
They allow any girl to have long luscious hair in an instant, without the long wait of growing their hair.
They range between human hair or synthetic and full-attached extensions or clip in pieces, giving the option of having long hair ‘just for the night’.
“There is a different price and quality range available depending on the person,” said Mr Mollica.
Synthetic hair extensions give users a limited range of options, as they shouldn’t be straightened, dried with a hair drier or used with hot tongs.
Human hair extensions, by comparison, are more lifelike and can be washed, straightened or curled as you would with your own hair.
Mr Mollica suggests using moisturising products on human hair extensions, rather than protein based shampoos and conditioners.
Also, for best results apply a light coat of serum spray before using heated products and when straightening, for best results use a GHD straightener.
“GHD is definitely the best product going around,” recommends Mr Mollica.
The Fringe
Catwalks across the world have shown the good old fringe is back.
Both the seventies style blunt, bold style, with its geometric cut, as well as the loosely side parted fringe is back with a vengeance.
Mr Mollica at Hair News says he has had many girls come into his salon requesting a wispy side fringe.
“It suits many people, ranging from young teens to older women,” he told Wyndham Pages.
Fringes are great for the winter months and perfect to draw attention to your eyes.
If you’re not sure which kind to go for, keep this in mind: the blunt cut suits thicker hair and angular shaped faces, while the softer side fringe suits round faces with fine hair.
Men’s styles
For men, 2007 has seen a messy, chipped in look.
“The clipper shave has really gone now,” says Ms Debrincat from Remedy Hair n’ Beauty.
The new in-look for men is a get-up-and-go style, which is a little wild.
“A bit of fudge or gel and it’s ready to go,” says Mr Mollica.
2007 has also seen men using more colours and products than ever before.
“Men are more particular about how they look and a lot more fussy.
“Sometimes even more than women!”
